Helsinki, Finland – Underground City

The first leg of our Scandinavia trip was in Helsinki, Finland.  We were there all of 2 minutes and then we left for Sweden.  It’s a shame that we didn’t get to stick around a little bit longer because when I googled Helsinki, Finland and sustainability, I found this gem of an article.

This article talks of an underground city in Helsinki.  Apparently there is already a vast network of tunnels and underground structures under the city and there are plans to expand to accomodate 200 more such structures underground.  A lot of the shopping malls and other similar structures are already built underground.  There is even a underground swimming pool which I’m going to assume is very popular during the winter.  This is a great way to keep all the CO2 emissions underground and out of the earth’s atmosphere.  Oh if only we’d known about this.  It would be quite amazing to see this underground city.
