Team öl snälla: Rovio & It’s Angry Birds

June 6, 2014,

Angry Birds is the most successful mobile game App of its time.  For example the game has 2 Billion unique smartphone downloads across all mobile platforms and has become a global sensation attracting a different array of target markets and age groups allowing the game to reach the top spot in the App store after only six months after its introduction.  Angry Birds was created by Rovio Entertainment, which is a video game developing company based in Finland.   During the company’s presentation, we were told that Rovio believes that the games success is due to the game’s easy to learn gameplay and its ability to retain players due to the game progressively getting harder with each new level.   For those readers that have never played the game, the purpose of Angry Birds is to slingshot birds that are angry with the Bad Piggies, who are villains that stole the bird’s eggs.  The purpose of the game is to sling shot the birds in the correct angle so that the structures fall and kill all the Bad Piggies on each given level.  Points are allocated on the overall quality of the shot and how many birds remain after the level is completed. After the games international success, Rovio decided to create a culture around the game so that characters could become more relatable to the players. In order to make the characters more relatable Rovio introduced several brand extension products such as games that include Friends, Space, and Star Wars, books, and Angry Birds merchandise.  In addition, Rovio created Angry Bird Toons, which is a show that provides character backgrounds and development, and this introduction, has further led to the future production of the Angry Birds movie expected to release in 2016.  Moreover, the company decided to create an Angry Birds theme park located in the Särkänniemi Adventure Park in Finland and increase the number of their company headquarters around the globe.  For example, Rovio has established branch offices in Los Angeles, Shanghai, Tokyo, London, etc to help better understand their target market customers on an international level and all branches employee 800 workers from 38 different nations.   This international business strategy is allowing Angry Birds to better penetrate markets around the world and is creating an international brand, which was humbly started and expected to only become a success in Finland.
