Business Visit to Skelleftea & Arrival at Helsinki, Finland

Our journey commenced with a delightful European breakfast buffet at the Kust Hotel & Spa in Piteå, the most stylish lodging of our tour. The breakfast echoed the quality found throughout Sweden—excellent bread and refreshing fruits set the tone for the day. After an hour’s drive to Skellefteå, we wrapped up our morning with insightful presentations and discussions, an integral part of our MBA curriculum focusing on international business environments. The post-discussion phase allowed us some leisure time to explore Skellefteå’s culinary scene.

Opting for a quick lunch, we discovered Bastard Burgers. Their Green Notorious Chilli Cheese burger, accompanied by a side of extra cheese dip and a Zero 7Up, was impressive, though the meal came with a steep price tag of $19.79. This prompted reflections on the economic implications of automation in the fast food industry. Bastard Burgers employs an automated ordering process that minimizes staffing needs, potentially signaling significant shifts in labor dynamics and operational margins within the sector. Despite its modern, youth-oriented ambiance—reminiscent of Five Guys in the US—the restaurant’s high pricing and my subsequent digestive discomfort impacted my overall rating, which I would place at 3.8/5.

The trip’s gastronomic highlight was a meticulously planned dinner by Professor Myer, ensuring we experienced the best dining Piteå had to offer during a holiday. The evening featured a three-course meal including a dessert, with each dish pairing exquisitely with a selected Spanish white wine. The mushroom risotto and crème brûlée stood out, notably changing my usual aversion to mushrooms due to their meat-like texture. This meal was not just a treat for the palate but also showcased the local culinary prowess, making it a memorable part of our Scandinavian tour.

Our educational journey took us from Piteå to Helsinki, via a layover in Stockholm. Upon settling into the Clarion Hotel in Helsinki, our group, comprising Nick, Giancarlo, Josh, Saif, and myself, ventured out to explore the local cuisine. We decided on Restaurant Monal Indian Cuisine for dinner. Our order included a variety of dishes: Samosa, Veg Pakora, Butter Chicken Masala, Lamb Rogan Josh, Yellow Dal, Bhindi Masala, Tandoori Chicken, Garlic Naan, Basmati White Rice, and beverages. The total bill came to about 200 Euros, which averages to 40 Euros per person, approximately $43 excluding tips. This pricing prompted a discussion on cost versus value, particularly in terms of food quantity and the restaurant’s ambience, which we found to be mediocre compared to others visited during our trip. However, the quality and flavor of the food were exceptional
