Linköping: Scooters, Billiards, and Academic Insights

Continuing from where we left off, our quick pit stop in Linköping turned out to be a delightful experience, even if it was brief. We enjoyed exploring the small, walkable town and appreciated the charm of Stora Torget. The night was young, and we decided to make the most of our time there.

After settling in, we took a stroll to grab some food and headed to Stora Torget, a small but lively square in Linköping. The square is a hub of activity, with street cafes, restaurants, and a bar in the middle offering a 360-degree view. It felt very much like a Scandinavian version of the Orange Circle for Chapman students, a place to unwind, grab food, and socialize. We noticed a lot of college students around, which added to the vibrant atmosphere.

A group of us ended up having dinner at a restaurant in the square. The food was amazing, and the company even better. The ambiance of the square, with its relaxed yet lively feel, was the perfect setting for our meal. After dinner, we decided to explore the city streets on electric scooters. Riding through the quiet streets of Linköping at night was an exhilarating experience. The cool breeze, the serene environment, and the freedom of zipping around on scooters made it a memorable adventure. It was a fantastic way to see more of the city and added a fun twist to our evening.

Not ready to call it a night, we discovered a bar above the restaurant with a billiards table. It was the perfect way to end the evening. We played pool with each other and even joined in with some locals. It was a fun, spontaneous way to bond with our classmates and meet new people.

The next morning, we were ready for our visit to Linköping University. The university, though perhaps less well-known internationally than some other Swedish institutions, is a hidden gem. It’s a young university by European standards, having been established in 1975, but it has quickly made a name for itself, especially in the fields of technology and research.

Sweden, as a country, is known for its commitment to innovation and sustainability, and Linköping University embodies these values. One fun fact we learned is that Linköping University was the first in Sweden to adopt a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, which has now become a model for many universities worldwide. This innovative method focuses on student-driven learning through solving real-world problems, which perfectly aligns with the university’s mission to foster innovation and practical skills.

Our visit started with a presentation on the university’s AI research initiatives. The depth of research and the passion of the speakers were truly inspiring. The speaker introduced us to some of the groundbreaking work being done to improve healthcare through AI, such as developing algorithms that can predict disease outbreaks and personalize treatment plans for patients. It was fascinating and a little mind-blowing to see how far AI has come and how it’s being used to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.

Next, we dove into the world of data analytics. The speaker captivated us with stories about how data is transforming industries and driving decision-making processes. One particularly interesting case study showed how data analytics helped a company streamline its supply chain, saving millions of dollars and significantly reducing its carbon footprint. As someone who’s passionate about tech and business, it was amazing to see the real-world impact of these technologies.

The session on startups transitioning to successful businesses was particularly engaging. We heard from entrepreneurs who shared their journeys, challenges, and triumphs. Their stories were a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives within the university. The emphasis on innovation, resilience, and adaptability resonated with many of us, sparking conversations about our own aspirations and ideas. It’s easy to see why Linköping University is considered a breeding ground for startups and innovation.

One of the highlights of our visit was the focus on international collaborations. The university prides itself on its global partnerships and exchange programs. We learned about various opportunities for students and researchers to work with international peers, fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment. This global perspective is something that deeply aligns with our values and ambitions.

As we made our way back to the hotel, we reflected on the day’s experiences. Visiting Professor Myhr’s alma mater added a personal touch to our trip, allowing us to connect on a deeper level with the places we were exploring. The combination of academic insights, cultural exchanges, and social interactions made our stop in Linköping a significant part of our journey through Scandinavia.

Our brief stay in Linköping may have been short, but it was packed with enriching experiences. From the welcoming vibes of Stora Torget to the inspiring presentations at the university and the comforting meal at Nomad, every moment added to the tapestry of our adventure. As we prepared to head to Stockholm, we carried with us not just knowledge, but also fond memories and a renewed sense of curiosity and connection.
